A Multimodal Study Of Formulation In TV Civil Mediations

As the mediation discourses encompasses a variety of various semiotic resourcessuch as visual image, sound, language, the multimodal analysis provides themediation discourse for the methodology and theoretical framework. Besides theample previous researches on civil mediation, however, are mainly constrained withinthe range of literature review, few accounts with conversational analysis approach,especially the perspective of multimodal analysis are given to its civil mediationdiscourse. As such, this thesis attempts to conduct the multimodal analysis on civilmediation discourse Gold Mediation.The present thesis analyzes the corpus of eleven Gold Mediation videodiscourses from Jiangxi Satellite TV. A quantitative and multimodal analysis way hasbeen conducted in this study. It analyzes formulation in TV civil mediation with theaim to explore the synergies of different modalities. This study has two steps: thestage1is a complement to stage2, as it overcomes the inherent defects in stage1bypresenting a finer analysis.Stage1aims to analyze representation features auditory modality and languagemodality in linguistic modality, bodily modality and non-bodily modality innon-linguistic modality of formulation in Gold Mediation.Stage2aims to investigate how and why different modes interact and cooperateto construct the affectual meaning in civil mediation on the basis of the findings of thefirst step under multimodal discourse analysis.Based on the above analysis, the major findings include: First, most offormulation is carried out by the mediator in TV civil mediation. At the same time,mediators choice of formulation is to guarantee the accuracy of information collectedfrom litigants narration. Adopting formulation, mediators can propose comparatively satisfactory mediation solution.Second, through the investigation of the synergy among the linguistic modalityincluding language modality and auditory modality, and the non-linguistic modalitywhich is realized by the bodily modality and the non-bodily modality, it is found thatlinguistic modality is the main modality. Meanwhile, affectual meaning of formulationis realized by bodily modality between mediators and litigants and non-bodilymodality. It can reflect the relations of different modalities both in the collaboratedprocess of making meaning. The analysis of the affectual meaning in Gold Mediationmay help people better understand how affectual meaning in Gold Mediationinfluence people. The synergy among the language modality, auditory modality,bodily modality and non-bodily modality is co-articulation relation andcomplementary relation: reinforcement and non-reinforcement relation.Third, the thesis analyzes the formulation from the perspective of multimodalsynergy, it is discovered that mediator s formulation plays an important role in TVcivil mediation. It is discussed that formulation in civil mediation is often used toobtain confirmation or seek more information from litigants and the influencingfactors of formulation: cultural context and scene context.
