Religion has a close relationship with literature. Religion not only influences thetheme of the literary works, but also constitutes a part of the content in the literarywork. However, the translation of the religious content is marginalized in thetranslation of literary works, and hasn’t been given enough attention.Mrs. Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin is a literary work containing strong religiousflavor. Huang Jizhong translated the whole content of the novel inmodern vernacular Chinese for the first time. His version enjoys popularity among theChinese readers, and it becomes the research object for the scholars to do translationresearch. The thesis also chooses this version to analyze what kind of translation rulesthe translator obeys or what kind of methods the translator uses.As the theoretical basis of the thesis, the Skopos theory is the most importanttheory in the German functionalist theory of translation. According to the Skopostheory, translation is a kind of action of human with certain purpose. The Skopostheory includes three basic rules: the skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelityrule. From the perspective of Skopos theory, the thesis analyses the translation of thereligious content in the novel. Through analysis, we can see that when the translatortranslates the religious content, he abides by three rules of the Skopos theory: theskopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule. Besides, the translator usesseveral methods to translate the religious content: literal translation, literal translationwith explanation, addition, free translation with explanation, change the sentenceorder and employment of Chinese four-character phrases. The author hopes the studycan benefit the future translators when they need to translate the religious content in literary works.
