As an essential factor which affects novel writing, the image-shaping directlydecides the fiction creation. According to the character history of Chinese contemporarynovels, writers of different times emphasize the image-shaping in various ways. As aresult of its social linguistic environment theory, each time has its literary image. In thethematic perspective, this article analyzes the image-shaping of Chinese contemporarynovels in four sections.According to the time order, Section One stresses on the subjectivity of therepressed, frustrated and regression. It analyzes representative figures in “seventeenyears”,“the decade of culture revolution” and new date. At the same time, it summarizesthe image-shaping theory and the features of literary figures in the subjectivity of therepressed, frustrated and regression. As a support of Liu Zaifu’s the literature subjectivity theory, Section Two analysesthe image-subject influence from both creation subject and receptor subject. It explainshow the creation subject affects the image-subject as an internal factor when the creationsubject was pressured and expanded. Meanwhile, it discusses how receptor subjectaffects the image-subject as an external factor in different historical periods. Such as in“seventeen years”,“the decade of culture revolution”, in the influence of the pre-setreceptor subject, the symbolic image-subjects was produced. Since the New date, thereduced image-subjects was created under the action of the open receptor subjects, various image-subjects and the expanded the receptor subjects. The external restraining factors and internal agents of the creative practice andimage-shaping theory are analyzed in Section Three. The external restraining factorsmainly includes the differences between time characters, the transfered focus of socialactivities and the transition of culture context. However, the internal agents are primarilydecided by the development of writers and theorist, the evolution of literary aestheticsand the changes of literary function. In a word, the creative practice and image-shapingtheory in Chinese contemporary novels are the results of the social times and thedevelopment of literature itself. Section Four covers the absence and expansion of subjectivity. Reflecting how thestrength subjectivity affects the image-shaping, this section discusses when the literaturesubjectivity is pressured, lost and expanded, the image-shaping will fall into modelingand simplification both in theory and creative practice. Only the literature goes back toits self-development, develops according to its artistic creative law and each subjectinteracts in the harmonious status, the image–shaping will present a rich and diversedeveloping state. From the literary subjectivity perspective, this article analyzes the image-shaping incontemporary novels, according to the time order. Meanwhile, it discusses the complexrelationship among image-shaping theory and the development of creative practice, characteristics of the times, social activities, cultural context, development of writers andtheorist, the literary aesthetics and literary function. So hope this thesis can be little helpto the research of image-shaping.
