| Carson McCullers, one of the most prominent female writers of American south in20thcentury,spent most of her adult life exploring and changing the spiritual status of humanexistence in America. Like a lonely hunter, McCullers made great efforts to contribute to notonly the Literature in the South but also to that of the world.The Heart is A Lonely Hunter, has been recognized as the first and the most importantwork of McCullers. It ranks the seventeenth in the “Top100English Novels in the20thcentury†which is named by American “Modern Semantic Databaseâ€. Since the publication in1939, it has attracted the highly attention of the literary world. Though the researchperspectives are diversified,there are still plenty of scopes and values. What’s more, as afemale writer, McCullers has a deep understanding of the oppression on female which comesfrom the patriarchy society in the South. Thus, this thesis chooses the perspective of femaleBildungsroman and combines the literary genre of Female Gothic to give a furtherinterpretation of the growth of the young girl Mick Kelly who is the soul representative ofCarson McCullers.This thesis includes five chapters. Chapter one is the introduction to Carson McCullers’slife experience, her representative work The Heart is A Lonely Hunter, the literature review athome and abroad, and the significance of this thesis. Chapter two is the theoretical foundationof the thesis and mainly includes two parts: the theory of Bildungsroman and Female Gothic.The growth of the heroine is combined to the Female Gothic factors, staggered on each other,comes into being the framework of the thesis. Chapter three and four are the main parts whichgive the interpretation of the heroine Mick Kelly how to fall into the trap and endeavor to getout of the trouble. The last chapter is the conclusion of this thesis.Admittedly, the growth of human being generally follows some of the fixed model;McCullers concentrates on the growth of the social marginal people especially women whichhave close relationship with her own growth experience in order to convey urgent requests forthe close attention to the living condition and the fate of women—appeals to build a societywith a harmonious relationship between male and female. |
