Eugene A. Nida proposed that translation is the communication between two languages. He gave priority to meaning equivalence and also thought the importance of the language form is not ignored. He emphasized that the translation version should be nature and closest to the source language by employing reasonable strategies and methods and make the target readers obtain the same or similar response as the original readers have.Xi You Ji as one of the four great Chinese classical novels enjoys the grate reputation and renown and is wildly accepted among readers all around the world. Lots of proverbs appeare in this famous work and it not only strengthens the expression effect and also increases the artistic value of the work.In this thesis, the author mainly discusses the translation of proverbs in Xi You Ji. With the analysis of the characteristics of Chinese proverbs from perspective of language and culture, the author analyzes the translation cases and the translation strategies and methods employed in Jenner’s version. Finally the author gets a conclusion that foreignization is the major translation strategies employed in translating Chinese proverbs in Xi You Ji because foreignization can maintain the original form and image mostly. However, foreignization can not solve all problems exist in proverbs translation. Domestication is also employed sometimes to make up the demerits of foreignization. Foreignization first and domestication second strategies with proper translation methods are the best way to translate proverbs in literature works.
