Translator’s Subjectivity From The Perspective Of The Skopos Theory

The present thesis studies the translator’s subjectivity in the translating process from the perspective of the Skopos Theory, with Howard Goldblatt’s translation script of Hong Gaoliang Jiazu as the case study and further explains how the translator realizes his subjectivity achieve success in his translation script.The study suggests that the translator’s subjectivity from the perspective of the Skopos Theory is the subjective intention, initiative and creativity displayed by the translator in the process of translation to fulfill his/her translation purpose, as well as the translator’s consideration of the interpersonal relationships between the translator and the author, the translator and the reader and the translator and the initiator; from the perspective of the Skopos Theory, the display of the translator’s subjectivity is mainly manifested in two aspects, namely, creativity and loyalty. These two aspects affect the whole translating process as follows: the translator’s creativity is mainly reflected on the pre-translation stage in three ways:selecting the source text, understanding the source text and displaying the translator’s style, while the loyalty is manifested on the in-translation stage to three parties:the author, the reader and the initiator.Creativity and loyalty both have been fully displayed in Howard Goldblatt’s English version of Hong Gaoliang Jiazu, which to some extent promote the success of Goldblatt’s translation of Hong Gaoliang Jiazu. Innovations of the present study are:(1) by applying the Skopos Theory to the analysis of the translator’s subjectivity, two components of the translator’s subjectivity have been concluded;(2) by applying these two aspects to study the English version of Hong Gaoliang Jiazu, a proper explanation from the perspective of the Skopos Theory is given for the success of the English version.
