Guilin occupies an important position in the Chinese literary world during the anti-Japanese war. At the same time when the original literature emerged constantly, the literary translation, especially the Chinese translation of British and American poetry in the wartime Guilin was rather prosperous. However, due to some unknown reasons and wrong understanding, the translation activities in the wartime Guilin didn’t receive due attention until2005. But the research of the Chinese translation of the British and American poetry didn’t develop in a deep and systematic way. This thesis first conducts a research and discussion about it.This thesis adopts methods of data collection, descriptive analysis and comparative analysis to retrospect the formation and cultural activities of the wartime Guilin, summarizes the current research achievements of the translated British and American poetry and draws forth the necessity of this thesis. Besides, Zong Wei’s The Isles of Greece, Li Minzi’s The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, Chen Shihuai’s I SAW Old General at Bay and Meng Jing’an’s Grass are chosen as the representatives to conduct a detailed analysis. Then, features and values of the translated British and American poetry in the wartime Guilin were summarized. Finally, the author points out that foreignization and rewriting are the main translation strategies that are used in the translated British and American poetry in the wartime Guilin. With purposefulness, popularization, timeliness, retranslation and flexibility in form and language as its features, the translated British and American poems are used to encourage the fighting morale of the wartime people and enrich the translated poetry treasury in China.Through a systematic analysis and discussion of the Chinese translation of the British and American poetry in Guilin as a cultural city from1938to1944, the author of this thesis hopes to enrich the treasury of China’s translation poetry, supplement the translation studies of the wartime Guilin, promote the position and role of poetry translation and arouse people’s attention and research to the local sources.
