After the16th century Reformation, the traditional Catholic (Universal) Churchwas divided into Roman Catholic Church and the Protestant church. The Christianchurch in China is the Protestant Church from the Reformation.In1868the Protestant Church and its music entered into Chengdu. At that time,the church continued singing traditional Hymns. Meanwhile its music style andpresentation forms combined with the local Chengdu culture and music elements andwere becoming indigenization unceasingly. The current Protestant Music presentationforms in Chengdu demonstrate its inheritance of the traditional music history as well asits absorption of the popular music elements. But singing still dominates the musicpresentation form.This paper consists of introduction, three statement and analysis parts and theconclusion. In part1, I attempt to give an overall summary, full analysis andinterpretation of the characteristics and styles of the current Protestant church music inChengdu through discussing the presentation form changes in the Christian music afterMartin Luther’s16th century Reformation and in reference to the development theProtestant church history in Chengdu.In part2, I will take the two Protestant Churchesof Chengdu:“Shangyu church” and “Thanksgiving church” as study objects. I wouldlike to make analysis of the music presentation forms, people arrangement, musicchoosing and the percentage of the audience participation of the two churches. Besides,I endeavor to compare presenting styles, people arrangement of the two churches to thebalance of the traditional Hymns and the popular praise worship songs. In part3, byanalyzing the Protestant music through personal experience involving in ChengduThanksgiving church Easter music show, I would like to clarity the currentpresentation styles of the Protestant music in Chengdu and its historical development.
