Ba Jin is affected by the "Spirit of May4th", the concept of the "home"and the "country" has always been existed throughout his literary creation. From theHome in thirties to the Cold Night in forties, from passion to quiet, Ba Jin’s creativeexperience of "running away-return" is in the process.Gao Juehui in the home could run away from home when he was young. But to thelate1940s, a middle-aged man, he formed a family, and his identity became WangWenxuan in the Cold Night. He couldn’t avoid family conflicts. In a sense, he took onthe mission of Gao Juexin in the home. From breaking with all passion to the old waywhich previous generation did, the problem turned a full circle back to the start. WangWenxuan was destroyed by family conflicts because of his character flaw. AlthoughZeng Shusheng escaped from the family, she couldn’t have a happy life either.During the May Fourth Movement, the awakening of the educated youth exaltedfreedom, democracy, scientific inspired in Western thought, that intent to break theshackles of feudal families. However, real life is not as smoothly as imagined. LiangQichao, Lu Xun, Hu Shi, who at that time had already seen some of the drawbacks ofWestern thought in Chinese Revolution. So, the reflection of the "Spirit of May4th"issue is that face contradictions of the reality and the ideal intellectual, the humanitarianand the individualism, the young people (including women) way out problems. ColdNight is the reflection on this issue after he experienced the baptism of war.Therefore, this article is divided into two chapters:Chapter1: By analyzing the relationship between mother-in-law anddaughter-in-law in the text, the direct reason of the tragedy, to explore the differencesbetween the old and new generations of women in thinking, lifestyle and reasons of theconflict. Observe the social and cultural contemplation that the text conveys.Chapter2: Combine with the home, and discuss the significance of Ba Jin’s familynovels. And, discuss Ba Jin’s issue on the May Fourth Movement of reflection, theideological and emotional change from the thirties to the forties: leave(escape thefamily)–fail–rethink–return(care for the family).
