The fourth generation of Chinese female directors is the largest and most influential female creative director group ever in the history of China’s filmdom, their rise not only benefits from the relatively unconstrained political and cultural environment, but is also a result of their own strength and endeavors. In1985, the Ministry of Culture awarded15excellent film works, and7of them were work from female directors. In their works, they discarded the simulation of male director’s works and revealed the unique perspective, position, temperament and style of women. Thus, Chinese female directors won a place for themselves in the director circle, which was ’too high to reach’ for them before. However, the way of creation is never a plain sailing, there are ups an downs, but with their insistence and love of movies, Chinese female directors still stick to their jobs, making an indelible contribution to the development of Chinese film.Depended mainly on the study of several typical female directors of the fourth generation, this thesis is divided into four parts. The first part is the analysis of the background of the fourth female directors’ rise, the environment of their growth stage and their explorations and practice of film theory. The second part presents the introduction of the female directors’ palmy film creation period in1980s, in terms of the richness of the subjects and styles of their works. The third part mainly focuses on the analysis of the creation plight the female directors faced and the adjustment they made under pressure in1990s, which is a transitional period for China’s politics, economy, culture, etc. The last part is the interpretation of cultural characteristics of Chinese female directors’ films.The innovation of this paper lies in that the author made a macro and systematic cohort study on china’s fourth generation female directors, the study involves many aspects, including theoretical research, creation analysis, realistic dilemma, cultural connotations and so on. Secondly, under the context of cohort study, the thesis analyzed six female representative directors’ achievements and creative features of the fourth generation, such as Huang Shuqin’s depth of mining about the female movie to the plight of female spirit; Shi Shujun, Wang Junzheng’ exquisite master for child and adolescent physical and psychological changes in the growth process; Wang Haowei’ efforts for the inheritance and innovation of comedy and Lu Xiaoya’ discussions of relationships in the real society and so on. The last, paper recalls the brilliant achievements of fourth generation female directors, and reviews every classic works, in order to incentive the contemporary female directors who feel confused exhausted, and offer an example for female directors who want to succeed in the film word.
