Charlotte Bronte is a writer whose novels inherit the realism tradition. At that time, she is the first writer to express the theme of women independent. Her novels are not only realistic, but also romantic. We can find a lot of romantic factors, just like Gothic factors. Charlotte Bronte uses the Gothic features in her novels to rich the novels’art. This dissertation mainly analyzes the relation between the Gothic novel features and Charlotte Bronte’s novels.This dissertation deals exclusively with the novels of Charlotte Bronte, and it consists seven parts including Introduction and Conclusion. Introduction traces the critics of Charlotte Bronte’s novels, and introduces the existing research results related to the topic. It leads to the topic of the dissertation. The main content is divided to five chapters. The first chapter reviews the history of the Gothic novels, including its origin and development. And combining with the life and creation of Charlotte Bronte, expounds the reasons why Charlotte Bronte using the Gothic novel features in her novels. In the second chapter, introduces the Gothic plots in Charlotte Bronte’s novels, from the supernatural elements, the suspense and the coincidence, and the violence and the pain plots. In the third chapter, I’ll combine the Gothic novels to analyze the Gothic characters in her novels, especially the male and the female images. In the fourth chapter, I’ll combine the Gothic novels and the aesthetic of the horror to analyze the Gothic scenes in her novels. In the fifth chapter, I’ll combine the Gothic novels to analyze the Gothic themes in her novels from the conflict between good and evil and the love subject. Conclusion mainly summarizes the whole content, and expresses the Gothic factors’significance in the art of her fictions.Charlotte Bronte’s novels aren’t the traditional Gothic novels; she inherits and studies the Gothic factors, and uses them in her fictions. It does not only make a contribution to express the themes of her novels and the charm of the art in her fictions, but also help us to realize her world of the passion and poetry.
