Korean writer-Choe In Hun published novel "The Tempest" in1970’s. In seventeenth century, British dramatist Shakespeare improvised play "The Tempest" too. It is no accident that both literature have same name because Choe In Hun once said he was influenced by the western literature. When Choe In Hun was writing this novel, Shakespeare’s works were very popular among the literati in South Korea. From this we can infer that Choe In Hun’s "Tempest" was influenced by Shakespeare’s "The Tempest." This is the premise of this paper.Shakespeare’s "The Tempest" shows European colonization of seventeenth century through the story of protagonist Prospero who usurped and recaptured the throne of his brother-Antonio by making a storm after learning magic. Choe In Hun’s "The Tempest" shows colonialism of western and Asian countries during the World War II through the story of Otto Menaker, who was born in colony, finding himself on the way to see the Indonesia independence movement leader Karnors after experiencing a storm. Both works shows the time of colonial rule, and both solved the problem using storm. These are the same point two works. However, Choe In Hun has the originality of his own in his work while using the structure of Shakespeare’s "The Tempest."This paper uses influence and parallel study method of comparative and world literature. After careful comparison of the two works, I found several innovative points of Choe In Hun’s work. First of all, in the Choe In Hun’s "The Tempest", the protagonist Otto Menaker found himself through a series of things and that process shows the colonial rule. The plot is tighter than Shakespeare’s "Tempest. Secondly, Shakespeare’s "The Tempest" is a play which abide by the law of "three unities". But, Choe In Hun’s "The Tempest" as a full-length novel. Finally, Shakespeare’s "The Tempest" is full of magic, while Choe In Hun’s "The Tempest" is more near to the reality.
