Freedom is a kind of transcendence which is realized in both material and spiritualdimensions. Since ancient times, the process for human to pursuit freedom is the process oftranscending the ego. Freedom embodies the feature of transcendence. This kind oftranscendence depends on the status in quo, hence freedom is never perpetual and it is thetranscendence of existing constraint for individuals. Therefore, freedom is the course ofconstant development and transcendence. With this kind of process of transcendence, human society move towards its own future continuously. Meanwhile, freedom has thefeature of individuation. The affairs that individuals hope they could decide do not belong tothe field of freedom, they are just the manifestation of freedom.Justice is the correction of freedom. Human pursuit for freedom is bound to causedisputes between people. At this point, justice is needed to restrict their behaviors with rules.Everybody has their own principles as constraints when pursuing freedom. Freedom tendsto concern individual feelings. In contrast, the standard of judging justice derives from thesociety and the overall social interests. The so-called justice is a norm to ensure thateveryone in a society could realize their own freedom to the uttermost. As same as freedom, justice is not perpetual either. We could not judge whether a matter is justicial without thespecific conditions. The change of connotation of justice should adapt to the change oftimes, so each era has different themes of justice. The American social relation which is yearned by Oates does not have hierarchicaland racial differences. Everyone can follow their own lifestyle through their efforts andchange their destiny by their own. The contemporary American society should acknowledgeand encourage diversity, ensure that everyone has the right to pursue the upmost freedomand people with diverse hierarchical and racial background could obtain equal opportunitiesof progress.
