The Good Earth trilogy, American writer Pearl Buck’s works, and Moment in Peking, by Chinese writer Lin Yutang, are all known for western readers, which are written in English. The Good Earth has come to international fame since it won the Nobel prize in1938, which has been a window to know China for the western world. Similarly, Moment in Peking won the Nobel tittle, which also has great influence in western world, although it lost the prize then. Considering the background of creating and the cultural philosophy of the two authors, their works possess the typical peculiarity of cross-cultural writing. By describing Wanglong and his family’s vicissitudes and fate, The Good Earth trilogy shows all kinds of changes in modern Chinese history in a thorough way. And Moment in Peking describes the ups and downs of Yaos, Zengs and Nius, revealing the social changes from the end of19th century to the early20th century of china. The two novels shows all kinds of changes in modern Chinese, discuss the fate of Chinese women who lived in a time full of reform and turbulence, the works have abundant and detailed presentation. Pearl Buck created those female images like Lan, Ailan and Meilin in her works, meanwhile Lin Yutang created Manniang, Suyun and Mulan,which can be regarded as typical Chinese female characters of all classes in literature. These characters have a profound effect in helping western countries to know Chinese society and Chinese women.The system of the social culture can play a vital reference role while writers create their figures. To a certain extent, each character has reflects some aspect of the culture. Meanwhile, a writer’s cultural philosophy can govern the process of creating characters. Based on the close reading, this paper starts from Pearl Buck and Lin Yutang’s cross-cultural writing, trying to make a systematic research on the female images in both novels, depending on the theories of feminism and cultural criticism. Combing the details of the evaluation systems for traditional females and modern females, we attempt to analyze their attention on the fate and social status of Chinese women in a time full of reform, and the concrete reflection in their works.This paper has four chapters. The first chapter discusses the typical peculiarity of cross-cultural writing of Pearl Buck and Lin Yutang, considering that because of the effect of Christian culture and Confucian culture, their cultural identities are finally set, so that they can create artistic images in the special environment of the thirties in the twentieth century, especially showing the ups and downs of Chinese women in that part of history. The second chapter mainly discusses the description of women’s fate in these two works, trying to have a wider and deeper discussion on six women’s fate.Lan, Ailan, Meilin, Manniang, Suyun and Mulan included. Based on the reference of the evaluation systems for traditional females and modern females.In the next chapter, we attempt to analyze the secret female view of these two writers’creating.The last chapter focuses on the three kinds of female images, like Lan and Manniang, Ailan and Suyun,Meilin and Mulan, trying to discover the cultural philosophy of these images.
