A Study On The Image Of Women In Workforce In Chinese Modern Novels

During the May Fourth New Culture Movement, women’s liberation beingwidespreadly concerned in the community, elites in men and women circles hadjointly battled to promote Chinese women’s employment practices, and a women’semployment ideological trend, which should not be underestimated, was formedgradually in Chinese opinion circle.When the society ideological trend of womenemployment prevailed and some New Women engaged in stable jobs found favour inelite culture, this community trend was captured quickly by writers with theirsensitive feelings, and some popular novel writers and new culture writers began toproduce novels with the theme describing the life of the women in workforce. Until1930s and1940s, novels of this kind were much increasingly produced, which leadsome scholars to study novels about women in workforce in the history of modernliterature.This thesis aims to study the image of women in workforce in Chinese modernnovels, trying to discuss the existence and evolution of the image of Chinese modernwomen in workforce from three time dimensions:1920s,1930s and1940s.From thewriting of every specific dimension, this thesis will tease out some relevant publicvoices about women employment of different times, and then discuss and analyse therelevance and difference between the image of women in workforce formed bymainstream public voices and that characterized by literature works, so as to revealthe great influence on literature creation from the evolution of social context ofdifferent times.From the deviation of New Woman image in public voices and OldLady image in literature, to the multiple display of Office Lady image and ModernGirl image in public voices in the literature of1930s, and then to the completeconformation to the image of Woman Warrior in mainstream public voices by theimage of women in workforce in literature works, we can know the impressiveinfluence on literature from many factors like society, politic, public voice etc and thedifferent features of women in workforce in the literature of different times, whichcan provide an useful reference to retore the origional survival image of women inworkforce in modern times and reveal the whole social panorama and humanedisposition of different times.
