| Abstract:Since oil painting was introduced into China, it has gone through much absorption, study and development for about one hundred years.Looking back on the process, we can find it more difficult for chinese people to learn oil paiting than westerners. What westerners need to do is only to inherite and deveop their own traditional art, while we chinese not only have to master the skills, but also have to think of combining and recreating it with chinese traditional cuture, the present situation of social development as well as unique aesthetics concept and then gradually making it become chinese own national characteristic of art.This essay first talks about the origin of chinese oil painting, and then compares and analyzes the background of chinese and western art culture. It finally puts forward a quite new opinion of the current development of chinese contemporary oil painting. In the analysis of chinese contemporary oil painting, the essay explains the revolution of material as medium into traditional oil painting, and the tranform of art language from realistic painting to abstract painting. Through the analysis of typical works of art, it states the trend of art development because of the influence of current culture. Through my constant study and practice, I have gradually changed my traditional opinion and gained some creative inspiration by referring to the literature of development of contemporary oil painting as well as the exhibition of arts. Oil painting is no longer a single pattern on the easel. Instead, it presents artistic thoughts through material medium, and expresses the new esthetic ideas and the esthetic trends under the contemporary oil painting environment.Chinese oil painting in this essay mainly refers to the oil painting after the adoption of reform and opening-up policy.Despite some achievements, I have met with quite a few challenges.
