The bad men images in Jane Austen’s novels can be divided into three kinds ofidentity: the nobles or squire, the soldier and the priest. For the noble or squire, Austenexposed their voluptuous, which was obviously contrast with the toiling masses created inher works. Austen questioned and criticized the view of life and value of the bad manfrom the perspective of the times. For the priest, Austen did a strong moralizing fromreligion, personal beliefs and love faith three aspects, which was opposite with the corevalues of Christianity---"Love and Justice". For the soldier in Austen’s works, whether itwas admiral, lieutenant and ordinary soldiers, they all did the same thing——romance indifferent time and place. Austen criticized that they were mercenary, despised the poorand make up to the rich, and were weak sense of responsibility.The bad man images in Jane Austen’s novels had a certain ideological value. Theyreflected the women’s submit status, which was caused by individuals, families and thetime together. As a female writer of unmarried all the life, Austen had her own uniqueinsights on marriage. She believed that female could have the absolute authority and sayin various matters only by getting the independence in economy. They didn’t depend onman in the economy, so they had their own right to choose and the right to defense themarriage and reputation. Meanwhile, appearance of the man always made the femaleproduce a halo effect on psychology, it can cause the female blindly believe and pro-gazein men, and it made the inherent quality unrelated with the appearance get betterevaluation. It was like a mirror that refracting the author’s concept of family education,which were the fit of marriage concept, personality concept and family concept. Austenbelieved that the absence of family education, hereditary wealth and vanity impetuoussocial climate was the crux which promoting appearance of the bad man. It can reveal thehuman greed and selfishness from them, which was the consequences of egoism after therenaissance, was the consequences of humanity had been poisoned under the tide of theindustrial revolution, and was the consequences of self-love and self-hate heart anxious.For any cruel and impulsive that for meeting individual needs had the certain rationalityin that era. The Industrial Revolution created wealth and brought about personalfulfillment, but it also contributed to the expansion of personal desires.Meanwhile, the bad man images in Jane Austen’s novels had a certain aestheticvalue. Austen really uncovered many abuses of that era with ironic comedy skill andcontradistinction skill. At the end, as an opportunity to bad man images, the article briefly discussed the definition of today’s society and it’s modern reflection.
