The Influence Of The Deterioration Of Detroit On The African American Detroiters

This paper focuses on the deterioration of Detroit and the influences exerted by its deterioration on the African American Detroiters. A special attention shall be paid that Detroit in this paper refers to the city of Detroit or Downtown Detroit rather than the Detroit metropolitan area or Metro Detroit.With the materials and resources available, this paper first analyzes the rise, development and deterioration of Detroit, among which the reasons, like the industrial and racial reasons, of the deterioration are strengthened. By comparing the life status of the African Americans before and after Detroit deterioration, the study obviously finds the profound influences brought by the deterioration. Blacks have made great contribution to the prosperity of Detroit. However, facing the city’s decline, the general situation of African American Detroiters has been worse and worse. Discrimination and segregation against black Detroiters in employment, residents and education are getting more serious. Many more problems such as the high unemployment, high crime rate, more drug abusers and more HIV carriers have been worsened. In order to revitalize the ruin city, the federal, state and municipal governments have made some efforts, but blacks’ predicament did not change because the efforts had not paid off to improve the blacks’ situation. At last, some possible and feasible measures are suggested and presented to help improve the general situation of black Detroiters within the city of Detroit, including efforts to gild black ghettoes, to provide more job opportunities and the most important is to promote racial integration. Based on the method of comparative research, the paper digs the relationship between the deterioration of the city of Detroit and the worse condition of the African American Detroiters within. Method of literature review is also used in the thesis when the contents refer to the historical and statistical parts.
