With the economic development of China and the enhancement of awareness of collection, the bamboo carving market has expanded by leaps and bounds, which has become the fully potential market with good prospects, and aroused the attention from international community in recent years. Combining the exquisite carving workmanship with the painting technique, the bamboo carving artists have been creating a lot of high-quality artworks by using bamboo and knife. However, there are a small number of C-E translations of bamboo carving artworks in China, lacking of influential theoretical guidance, classification, sorting, and exposition, which is not good for obtaining identity from international community, and weakens the purchasing power of collectors abroad. Translation strategies and plans are discussed in this report based on the source text of the first chapter from the book Fine Collections of Chinese Antique Carving:Bamboo Wood, Ivory and Horn. As the source text has distinctive features, the specific target reader, it belongs to the application-oriented text. Under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence, a translator should deal with the text from the perspective of acceptability of the target reader, and pay attention to information transfer and reader’s response. Moreover, he should master the flexible mode of expression, pass on information accurately, and reproduce the charm of art. The author of this report demonstrates some methods of translation by taking examples, including addition, deletion, conversion, combination, division, affirmative translation, and negative translation, in order to remove the cultural barriers and achieve effective communications.
