On The Performability Of Theatre Translation

The present thesis for MTI degree is composed of two parts. Part One is a translation for The Trial of Anthony Burns (1854), an educational theatre written by Bethany Dunakin and Wendy Lement, and Part Two is a critical review and comment on the translation, discussing how to reproduce the performability of the original theatre in the course of translation.As a special literary genre, theatre enjoys the general features of literature, and also owns a complicated dual nature of readability and performability. Performing on the stage is its priority, so theatre translation is largely restricted by the time and space. On the one hand, translators should be faithful to the original text; and on the other hand, the stage effect counts a lot. To achieve a better stage effect, translators sometimes should jump out of the box and adopt some more flexible strategies and methods in theatre translation. The thesis takes a case of the translation of The Trial of Anthony Burns, focusing on four features of theatre, and tries to analyze the performability of theatre translation.
