Maxine Hong Kingston is the representative of Chinese-American writers who makesgreat contributions to the Chinese and even the American literature. Among all theChinese-American writers, Maxine Hong Kingston is an outstanding one; and among onlya few Chinese-American women writers, she is a brilliant one.Maxine Hong Kingston’s most famous book is The Woman Warrior. Since itspublication, The Woman Warrior has become one of the most popular books among theAmerican college students. It also attracts many critics’ and scholars’ attention and it iscalled “the milestone works in the Chinese-American history”. As a semi-autobiography, ittells the experiences of the author and the other four women characters, through whichMaxine Hong Kingston comes up with that there exist contradictions and divergencesbetween different genders, races and cultures. On this basis, Maxine Hong Kingstonpresents her androgynous viewpoints that the different genders, races and cultures should beandrogynous and harmonious.Since The Woman Warrior is published, many scholars at home and abroad havedone a lot of researches on it. However, few researchers analyzed it from the androgynousperspective, let alone Maxine Hong Kingston’s androgynous viewpoint. This thesis willanalyze Maxine Hong Kingston’s androgynous viewpoints by mainly using VirginiaWoolf’s androgynous theory and Bem’s Sex Role Inventory. During the analysis, the mainresearch methods will be close reading, exemplification and quantitative analysis. Byusing these three research methods, this thesis will deeply analyze Maxine HongKingston’s sexual, ethnical and cultural viewpoints in The Woman Warrior from theandrogynous aspect.The analysis on Maxine Hong Kingston’s androgynous viewpoints in The WomanWarrior will enrich the researches on Maxine Hong Kingston and even on theChinese-American literature. Besides the contributions in the literary fields, Maxine HongKingston’s androgynous viewpoints have practical significances. Nowadays, the globalization is developing comprehensively at a high speed. The contradictions andclashes among each country, each ethnic and each culture are inevitable. And MaxineHong Kingston’s androgynous viewpoints will not only give an effective way to deal withthe contradictions and conflicts, but also have active and positive function on the harmonyof gender, race, culture and world.
