As a component of the vague language, since Lakoff proposed the concept of hedge in1972, hedge has entered various linguistic fields and attracted many scholars’ attention andthey did researches from many different perspectives. Meanwhile, possessing the dualcharacteristics of interpersonal communication and mass communication, TV talk show alsocaptured many scholars’ attention. However, few scholars conducted their researches bycombining hedges with TV talk show. Therefore, the author intends to combine the study ofhedges with TV talk show to expand the scope of the study on hedges and TV talk show.The author chooses the TopTalkas the data resource and the qualitative approach as theresearch methodology. And then the author analyzes hedges used in those examples from thepragmatic perspective under the theoretical framework of Grice’s Cooperative Principle andLeech’s Politeness Principle. So Chapter three is the main part of this thesis.By analysis in detail, the paper obtains the following results: first, hedges are always usedin two situations when the speakers are unable to provide more precise information or whenthe speakers are unwilling to provide precise information after taking some other factors intoaccount; second, the main functions of the hedges are: to improve the efficiency and theaccuracy; to save face and maintain cooperative relations; to verbalize euphemism decent andto reflect the residents’ civility; to make the language own the feature of cancellability and toachieve the speaker’s self-protection.This paper would help people understand hedges in daily communication, improvepeople’s awareness of using hedges in daily life, expand the scope of the study on hedges andprovide evidence for further study.
