A Study Of The Application Of Cognitive Strategies In English Reading Instruction For English Majors

Reading is an important method for people to obtain information and exchange ideas. And it is also one of the social culture skills to live and develop in modern society. Reading comprehension has taken a larger proportion in English tests, especially Tests for English Majors-4 (TEM4), so the study of learning strategies has been a heated discussion among learners and teachers. However, the traditional method of reading instruction had a lot of problems. In this thesis, the author applied strategies training on English reading instruction for English majors from cognitive perspective.The thesis is based on cognitive strategies to analyze the process of reading. In this thesis, the author directs and guides students to master the proper cognitive strategies in the process of reading gradually. And at the same time, the study attempts to answer the following two questions:1) What are the effects of cognitive strategy training on English majors’ reading ability? 2) Can cognitive strategies boost English majors’ reading motivation and attitude?There are 64 sophomores as the subjects who majored in English from Shenyang City University. And the research methods contain tests and questionnaires. Tests were used to investigate the effects of cognitive strategy training in improving English majors’ English reading ability and the author made a contrast experiment of two classes. The questionnaires are employed to survey whether cognitive strategy training can boost students’ reading motivation and attitude. Results demonstrated that cognitive strategy training improved students’ ability of English reading comprehension effectively. And after cognitive strategy training, students’ reading motivation and attitude made a big change.
