John Fowles is an innovative novelist in British literature of the twentieth Century, his representative novel The French Lieutenant’s Woman has characteristics of traditional fiction stories and post modern innovative tactics. This paper intends to use metafiction theory, combined with the analysis of the characteristics of the text to unscramble the characteristics of The French Lieutenant’s Woman.This article mainly includes three parts: introduction, body paragraph and conclusion.The introduction part mainly introduces John Fowles and his masterpiece The French Lieutenant’s Woman.This paragraph also includes the domestic and foreign research present situation of The French Lieutenant’s Woman and the research situation of metafiction.The text part includes three chapters.
