William Faulkner and A Lai were famous writers in the period of social transition, social chaos and loss of humanity made them reflect the backward and degradation of civilization, thirst for the return of ideal human nature at the same time. A Lai had distinctly expressed the idea that he had learned a lot of methods about how to depict the characteristics of humanity in the unique regions and convey distress from William Faulkner, so in the base of influence study, it is feasible to comparatively study their representative works:The Dust Settles and The Sound and the Fury, striving to explore the similarities and differences of the two novels in hometown narrative. Two writers all described a big family from shine to mourning in which patriarchy was lost and descendants were away, but they maintained an uncertain attitude towards traditional civilization that they were intellectually alienated, but emotionally deeply attached to, meanwhile, we could find historical view of looking back on them, and they pursued the truth of history no longer, replaced by fancy and fictional history; moreover, they described a hometown rich in regional features, however, they all transcended narrow regionality and attached importance to general living dilemma of human beings. Furthermore, A Lai and Faulkner created many analogous figures such as fool, women and servants in their novels, by a contrastive analysis of them, we could find that they all conveyed humanitarian spirit of focusing on the fates of human beings, whether Faulkner aspired after the appearance of an apotheosis movement by means of conscience and dream, or A Lai overthrew and destructed the God with a playful and ironic attitude. In addition, Faulkner and A Lai had many common pursuits in narrative arts, so there were many similarities in poetic tendency, narrative view and the consciousness of time in their novels, however, different cultural tradition, living conditions and historical background brought about quite a few differences. At last, the similarities and differences of their produces in hometown narrative between William Faulkner and A Lai would be generalized, and then the gain and loss of A Lai, even throughout other contemporary writers in China would be summed up, in order to testimony which kind of literary work is great.
