Translation Strategy Research Of Buddhist Books From The Perspective Of Cultural Context Adaptation

Nowadays, many Buddhist books boards the bestseller list. And more and more English Buddhist books have been translated into Chinese, entering the Chinese market and influencing the readers’spiritual world. Meanwhile the cultural context adaptation theory has been widely applied to various types of translation studies. But there are few application and study in the field of philosophy and religion, especially in specific translation projects of Buddhist books. In addition, the author has interest in Buddhism and has done some research on it. Thus, on the base of cultural context adaptation theory, this report will analyze and compare the student’s translation version and Yao Renxi’s version of the introduction and the first chapter part from What Makes You Not a Buddhist written by Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse, a Bhutanese Buddhist Lama of Tibetan Buddhism, from the perspectives of Buddhist terminology, four-character phrase selection and passive sentence. For Buddhist terminology, the author realizes that the cultural customs of the target language should be adapted to and summarizes two kinds of translation strategies of Buddhist terminology E-C translation. For four-character phrase selection, expression habit of the target language should be adapted to. And the integration of sentences and more four-character phrases shall be considered in translation. And as for passive sentence, grammar habit of the target language should be adapted to. Through comparison and analysis, the author finds out the differences in the adaptation of cultural context, analyzes the causes of the differences, and also, hopes to get the beneficial supplement for the Buddhist books translation strategies.
