A Study On Culturally-loaded Words Translation Strategies Of The Chinese-English Conference Interpreting From Cultural Schema Perspective

Nowadays the conference interpreting plays an increasingly important role in inter-cultural communication, especially in press conferences held in the duration from NPC to CPPCC in China. Speeches delivered by the Chinese leaders at press conferences are characterized by high frequency of culturally-loaded expressions, such as poems, idioms, proverbs, slangs, and political terms. Given the limited time and resources, on-site interpretation is a really tough mission for an interpreter to interpret the discourses which contain a lot of unique Chinese culturally-loaded words. Based on the Cultural Schema Theory, which is a comparatively new theory deriving from Schema Theory, the author collects the cases of the speech by the Chinese leaders from the video clips of NPC and CPPCC during 2004～2014. Based on the Cultural Schema Theory, this thesis expounds the corresponding relationship of Chinese and English cultural schema and analyses factors causing the discrepancy in Chinese and English cultural schema, and then discusses the interpreting strategies of culturally-loaded words from equivalence of cultural schema, cross-matching of cultural schema, conflict of cultural schema and the absence of cultural schema categories.This thesis tries to point out that an interpreter first activates the cultural schema stored in the brain and decodes the cultural schema of the source language correctly to eliminate the cultural barriers of the source language. Then the interpreter rebuilds new cultural schema so as to adapt to the target language audience. The author aims at establishing a theoretical framework for analyzing and interpreting of culturally-loaded words in conference interpreting. Meanwhile, by studying the cases of conference interpreting, the thesis intends to put forward some positive strategies.
