As a prominent and productive translator, Howard Goldblatt has translated a great deal of Chinese literary works into English and his English versions win great popularity among the readers overseas. Since Mo Yan won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2012, Goldblatt?s translation of Mo Yan?s novels have attracted attention of Chinese translation scholars and critics. To study translation strategies of Goldblatt provides greater possibility to spread Chinese literary works to the world.Prof. Xu Jianzhong establishes the theory of translation ecology, constructs the systematic methods and proposes main laws and principles for the new interdisciplinary subject. In translation ecology, various kinds of restrictive factors play the roles and leave the influence on translating culture-loaded words in the whole trans-ecological environment, a multi-dimensional space and multi-cultural environment system in which translation activity is considered as the central part. Any kind of restrictive factor for translation activities has a tolerance range with maximum and minimum which represent the approaching point to the excessive translation and the deficient translation respectively. Certain translation work can be accepted by the readers from the target language when the restrictive factors are controlled at the optimum point or close to the optimal point, and the acceptance of translation work can also be weakened and restricted at the tendency of approaching to the maximum and minimum of tolerance range. In order to reduce the influence of restrictive factors and avoid the excessive translation and the deficient translation, Goldblatt applies certain translation strategies to fulfill the optimal principle for ecological translation of culture-loaded words. This research attempts to explore Goldblatt?s translation strategies used in Big Breasts and Wide Hips from the perspective of translation ecology, aiming at finding out the better translation methods for culture-loaded words and promoting the development of theories of translation ecology.
