Being highly educated,Toni Morrison(1931—)is an academic writer.The deeplyunderstanding of American society, politics and culture makes her well-known inAmerica as well as the world. Her topic mostly pays attention on the history, thedestiny and spiritual world of negros, such as beloved, which tells the racial traumathe negros brought by the slavery. Based on the historical facts, the writer explores thetraumatic symptoms and analyzes Morrison’s special opinions on racial trauma withtraumatic theory.The thesis consists of five parts and the main idea is the narrative, transmissionand healing of trauma.The preface introduces the domestic and foreign researches about Morrison, andpoints out the way and method of the thesis.The first chapter analyzes the narrative of racial trauma in Beloved.The noveluses some regular patterns of traumatic narrative, such as escaping trauma andreappearing trauma. In addition, Morrison takes use of her own special traumaticnarrative.This chapter also studies the reactions of the victims through traumaticsymptoms to show the spirit trauma that the slavery brought to the negros.The second chapter reveals the transmission and influence of racial trauma tonegross and their offsprings, and explores the transmission process of trauma. Then, itpoints out of the ways that trauma influences others, and how trauma spreads into thegroup in order to put forward the methods to eliminate trauma.The third chapter puts forward the healing ways of racial trauma. Morrisonthinks out of some ways to heal the trauma, such as the attitude of forgiveness, groupacceptance, witnessing and mourning, and reflecting the reason why the slavery isignored. These explorations are significant,which can be applied to the othertraumatic healing.The conclusion part shows how people confront with the trauma and accept itagain in beloved, thus obtaining the future and a new life.
