As a practice report on English to Chinese, this paper selects Chapter One of Where Do Camels Belong — The Story and Science of Invasive Species as translation text to explore application of Thick Translation in popular science text’s English to Chinese (E-C) translation and thus illustrates through various examples the corresponding translation methods. The author of the report treasures it as a useful attempt and expects to contribute a new interpretation angle for English for Science and Technology (EST) translation.Given general characteristics of popular science text and interest-orientation featured in specific translated text. Some key points that centers on the translation practice are listed as follows:1.translation touches upon both culture-loaded terms in source language cultures and professional terms and technical words related to science and nature.2. Since popular science text is a branch of science and technology text, translated text about popular science thereby is qualified with strict in logic and coherence in expression, which is essential in long sentences’ translation. Considering the translation process from source language to target language is cognition-based explicit processing, under the guidance of Thick Translation, the author of the paper attempts to enrich the target reader’s congnition by means of annotation and illustrative words to reshape the original cultural context, in this way a thorough comprehension of the source text are available to target language readers.Based on the analysis of Thick Translation and examples, it is found that Thick Translation with emphasises on thick context has its guiding significance in popular science text’s E-C translation. Besides, explicit translation is well achieved by reconstructing the original cultural context. Finally, on the one hand, explicit translation is target language reader orientation, aiming at satisfying their reading experience, and also realizes the goal of spreading knowledge of science and culture to the public.
