On Shu Qiao’s Dance Dramas

Shu Qiao, a famous Chinese contemporary dance drama choreographer. Since the creation of the dance drama "Moon Fairy" by her and Li Zhonglin in 1979, all her dance dramas have aroused attention and debates in the dance world. Early in the fifties and sixties of the last century, Shu Qiao was a famous dance drama performing artist, who occupied a position in the contemporary Chinese dance drama history by playing Zhou Xiuying, a role in the dance drama "Small Sword Society". She also embarked on her artistic creation for the sake of this dance drama. This paper starts from Shu Qiao’s dance drama creation and focuses on the characteristics of her creation.This paper is divided into three chapters to study the material selection, structure features and language characteristics, respectively.Material selection is the first step of the dance drama creation, also the first step in the research of Shu Qiao’s dance drama creation. In the first chapter, the author concludes its characteristics of material selection in three aspects:close to life and subjectifying as well as innermost. The author classifies and analyzes Shu Qiao’s works and summarizes its characteristics of material selection from various aspects and stages.Structure and language are the two important issues in the Shu Qiao’s dance drama creation. The author studies these two issues in the second and third chapter respectively. In the chapter of Shu Qiao’s dance drama structure characteristics, the author classifies the drama structure characteristics by phase type classification as’give priority to in order to dance’,’give priority to with people’,’give priority to with feeling’and’give priority to with me’by the promotion of progressive relations. The representative works of Shu Qiao in every stage have been analyzed with theory and practice to explain the structure features of the dance drama.In the chapter of the language features of Shu Qiao’s dance drama creation, we study the language characteristics of the dance and the music separately. By using the structure characteristics in second chapter as pave and guidance for the language features, the study and summarize of the language features of the dance drama creation has been finally accomplished.
