Application Of Lexical Approach To The Teaching Of English Practical Writing In Higher Vocational College

At present, English practical writing has become a basic writing skill in economic and life fields. Bing an English teacher, we want to improve English writing in teaching content and method and establish writing teaching system to satisfy the needs of the society. The author views that the teaching system must be based on characteristics of English to imparting knowledge.Lexical chunk shows the interaction of semantics, syntax and pragmatics,and helps learners to achieve appropriate of expressions. The lexical approach emphasizes on the grammatical correctness and the rationality of the situation and makes up for the deficiency of the structural approach and communicative approach. In this research, lexical approach is considered as a new method to use in English practical writing.In the study, the author points out following questions: 1. Can students’ interest of English writing be improved by applying lexical-chunk approach to the English class? 2. Can lexical-chunk approach improve the level of higher vocational college student’s practical writing?First of all, the author chooses two nature classes in Inner Mongolia chemical Engineering Professional College. One Class as the experimental group(EG), the author conducts the teaching of lexical approach; the other class as the control group(CG), the author uses the traditional teaching. By compared the scores of practical writing and the number of lexical chunks used in writings, the author draw the conclusions that lexical approach play a positive role in practical writing and the number of lexical chunks has been increased in the college students’ writing. In addition, through questionnaires and interview, the author points out that the most of students from EG adopt lexical approach and become interested in writing.
