“American dream” is a common belief, which is an American traditional values and a sign of national spirit, also be regarded as the essence of American culture. In this paper, from the twentieth century American literature in the evolution process of the "American dream", through analysis Ernest Hemingway and Heller’s representative literary works, discussed under the specific social and historical background characteristics and specific performance, the "American dream" embodied in the literary work of sticking to the variation of the escape this topic and further discusses the "American dream" of the 20 th century American culture reflected in the spirit.
