Compliment, also as a carrier of politeness, is a positive evaluation for other persons Being a lubricant smoothing and easing the whole society, it exists everywhere to maintain a good relationship and closer the distance between different peoples. Easy and familiar as it is, compliment may cause troubles and misunderstandings if used inappropriately. Therefore, it should be noticed that any kind of language has its own characteristics, varying with different cultural backgrounds.From 1970s till now, a large number of researches on compliment proposed by scholars at home and abroad, among which either focus on compliment generally, merely introduce the features of it or emphasize on the strategies of responding compliment. Although the rise of cross-cultural communication has provided a novel perspective for scholars of this field, the number of specific and detailed studies pinpointing a specific category of compliment in certain conditions is quite small.This thesis, based on linguistic data collected from Take Me Out, an American blind-date show, focusing on a specific theme of marriage and relationship broadcast by television, the specific fixed medium, studies the linguistic characteristics of compliments occurred in this show, and also explores the semantic load carriers, syntactic patterns, distribution of conversation topics and social functions of compliments to demonstrate and pursue how to apply speech act theories and politeness principles to actual compliments.The popularity of a Chinese dating show, If You Are the One, has attracted a large number of American people to attend the show. However, a successful relationship of a couple with two different cultural backgrounds should be built on a basis of successful communication, in which the expression of compliments is of the most importance to win favor of the Mr. Right. This thesis will help to smooth the communication between two persons with different nations and cultures in love.
