Tan Dun is a famous composer and director in China, whose opera isalways dissociated with tradition and modern but not completely brokenaway from the two. His opera”The First Emperor of Qin”is quite atypical masterpiece. Since this opera is newly composed and playedabroad for the first time, the significance and depth of this works is quiterepresentative.“The First Emperor of Qin” describes such a story: WhenQin Dynasty unified all the six countries, The First Emperor of Qin askedGao Jianli to compose an ode standing for the spirit of the emperor.However, things eventually turned to be the tragic love between GaoJianli and princess Yue Yang. At last, the First Emperor of Qin ended upin the rellion and desertion of all the people. This opera is grand andspectacular in scene, flexciable and various in form, beautiful andtouching in melody, what’s more, it is full of Chinese color.This article is divided into four parts. The first part is to introducethe life of Tan Dun and his characteristics in music creation,to summrizehis characteristics in opera creation, and to introduce opera “The First Emperor of Qin”. The second part is to fully describe Tan Dun’s opera bystudying and analizing diverse musical elements from different aspects inopera“The First Emperor of Qin”.The third part is to analysecharacterization and personification by analysing the confliction amongpeople and Tan Dun’s music characteristics.The fourth part is to innovatethe performance style and creation idea in the development of Chineseopera through the study and analysis of “The First Emperor of Qin”,andit plays a significant and practical role in the creation and development ofour national opera.
