Long Sentences And Their Translation In English Legislative Language

The frequent use of long sentences is a common phenomenon in normative legaldocuments, particularly in legislative documents, and it is also an important featurethat distinguishes from other types of documents. Long sentence translation is ofparticularly importance among all the respects in the English-Chinese translation oflegislative translation. Frankly speaking, the process of long sentence directlyinfluences the legal effects of the translation version, and plays a decisive role ineffectively improving translation quality. Therefore, during the translation process, inorder to make the translation version not only fidelity to the original version, but alsoconsistent in the express custom of the target language, the translator needs to analyzethe structure of the original sentence as carefully as possible, make clear the logicrelation among all the clauses, organize translation in the target language, and makeappropriate adjustments to the translation through applying translation strategies.This report attempts to analyze the categories and features of the long sentence inlegislation language through the translation experience from the translation ofAustralia Work Health and Safety Act2011, to divide long sentences as simplesentence and compound sentence in accordance with the long sentences’ structure,and to explore the main translation strategies.
