The study of teachers’ questioning has become a hot research topic in the field oflanguage education. Lots of scholars have conducted related studies and obtainedfruitful accomplishments from the angle of psychology and pedagogy, but thedynamics of questioning is still not completely revealed. In addition, only a smallnumber of researches investigated the problem from the perspective of pragmatics.Adaption Theory opens up a new research perspective and provides a comprehensiveframework for the research on linguistic phenomena, thereby providing a theoreticalbasis for the use of teachers’ questioning in college English classroom. The purpose ofthe present study is to explore teachers’ questioning on the basis of Adaption Theory inorder to give some reference for the future English teaching and learning.Based on the theory of teachers’ questioning, the study used the questionnaireand the interview to get the data. The data are collected, processed and analyzed bySPSS17.0.The results of the present study proved that teachers’ questioning on the basis ofAdaption Theory plays an important role in the acquisition of second language. And itis a dynamic choice-making process, which is affected by many factors. Teachers’questioning is the product of contextual adaptation. The adaptive objects are teachersthemselves, students and relevant elements of social, mental and physical world. Thepresent study demonstrates the adaptive process of teachers’ questioning in collegeEnglish class so as to enhance the interaction between students and teachers andimprove the efficiency of learning and teaching. In a word, the study also provides anew perspective for the study of teachers’ questioning in college.The thesis contains five chapters. Chapter One presents an introduction,including the research background, the purpose and significance. Chapter Twoprovides a literature review on Adaptation Theory and teachers’ questioning. ChapterThree elaborates the overall design of the survey. Chapter Four presents the resultsand analysis of the investigation. Finally, Chapter Five draws the conclusion, in which findings, implications and limitations of the study are well illustrated.
