E-review as a new genre based on new media technology, stands out as a new language expression system. But whether its appraisal features distinguish from traditional book reviews from the newspapers.Appraisal theory of Martin&White provides the basic framework of systemic functional linguistics. This study attempts to conduct two self-built corpus, which were built to figure out the appraisal language differences between e-review and traditional book review of The Fault in Our Stars, and to explore whether the e-review genre enhanced comment function of book review. Two questions will be assured:the appraisal features of e-reviews in intertextuality and whether there is a distinguished difference between two genres.In order to answer the questions, this study establishes two self-built corpus with resources extracted from amazon and PressDisplay database.The research finds that the force system and engagement system of e-reviews is much more frequent than that of traditional book reviews, while the negative appreciation system of traditional book review is a lot more than e-reviews. Aside from that, e-review possesses more symbolic and multi-compound expression than traditional book review.This comparative study finds that e-review is more subjective, emotional, unprofessional but multi-level in evaluation, and it features of authenticity and intertextuality with argumentative and persuasive mechanism. It focuses on the reasonability of plot and reality of characters, and it establishes a more constructive, targeted, personalized advice in five-star standard system to potential readers. And e-review does play a part in improving comment function of book review. |
