As one of the sixth generation directors, Yibai Zhang, who is the most typicaland distinguished one, devoted himself in producing “Urban Movies”, of which thestyle embodies the whole characteristics of the sixth generation directors and neverobliterates the experience and feelings in his own life track. Therefore, the epoch andthe individual characteristics condensed the commercial literature movies, permeatingnonsaline pessimism. Of all his urban movies,“urban images” becomes the key pointof his image narration. From his first movie, Spring Subway, Yibai Zhang’s urbanmovie production has changed with China’s urbanization. In the following movies,such as Curiosity Kills the Cat, the Longest Night in Shanghai, Lost Indulgence,Eternal Moment and Fleet of Time, the space where the stories happened were locatedin Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing.This thesis analyses the “urban images” in Yibai Zhang’s urban movies, basedon the relevant theories and image data. Exordium is the brief introduction of YibaiZhang’s urban movies and magnifies the conceptive of the manner of the writing. Thefirst chapter is to demonstrate the relevant conceptions of “urban images”, beginningwith traceability of “image” and the definition of “urban images”, to summary thecurrent situation of the development of urban movies and the creation condition ofYibai Zhang. The second chapter is to analyse the symbolized “urban images”elements in the movies, to analyse from three aspects including object images,characters and colors in the concrete. The third chapter probes into the presentationmeans of “urban images” in Yibai Zhang’s movies from three aspects-narrativestrategy, microscope language expression and application of music. The forth chapterinterprets the multi-level meaning of “urban images” in Yibai Zhang’s movies fromthe perspectives of the paradox of urban, as well as the interaction of human beingsand urban. The conclusion is to summarize Yibai Zhang’s movies and thecharacteristics of “urban images”, to analyse the feeling transformation and theacceptance and rejection between arts and commerce in the process of Yibai Zhang’s creation.The thesis analyses the film creation of Yibai Zhang, beginning with the concept“urban images” and based on urban space theory of Kevin Lynch as well as someother relevant theories, so that it could provide some experiences to studies on urbanmovies in the concrete.
