People think of literary films when talking about French cinema, which initiallywere made to express thoughts. The paper analyzes works of Alain Renais, who leadthe French “Left Bank Group” films, by its imagery concepts, classified, as in thepaper,“reflection—image”,“recollection—image” and “reverie—image”. Theinterpretation also incorporates Gilles Louis Réné Deleuze’s review on the movies, and his “space—time” theory with Henri Bergson.Space and time in these films are different from those in reality. They are aproduce of art and difficult to achieve without the support of sound theoreticalanalyses and meticulous logical structure. Alain Renais managed it over60years ago.Cinematography plays a lively role in his pictures, recording as well as providing“reflection”,“recollection”, and “reverie”. When imagery functions as such, time andspace ties naturally. The paper also demonstrates Alain Renais’s cinematography incontemporary film narratives. Contemporary film narratives effectively inheritRenais’s cinematic “reflection”,“recollection”, and “reverie” with images, utilizingthem in commercial films, therefor winning both the critics and in the box office. Thepaper thus includes on Alain Renais’s contributions to contemporary film narrative.
