Jane Austen takes the romance of young people as her subject matter. Satire is her distinguishing feature. The present study represents an attempt to identify the factors that fashioned this feature. This study includes six parts.Through a close reading first chapter analyzes the plots, the ironic characters and satirical language of her novels. The second chapter reviews the history of satire in British literature, in hopes of revealing its influences upon Jane Austen. Also, a comparison with Henry Fielding is made to be of some help in this connection. The third chapter tries to give an account of influences from the Industrial Revolution and social changes. The fourth chapter highlights her identity as a female writer and compares her to other female writers in order to identify the subjective factors that brought about her satire. The fifth chapter offers an analysis of the influences from Jane Austen’s family and own personality on her satire. In the concluding remarks, I sum up the above discussions on the factors that make for Jane Austen’s achievement in satire.
