For a long time, college English teaching in China has been based on teacher-centered and examination-oriented method. The students are considered as silent passive knowledge receivers and lack of strong interest for English learning. Therefore, it is natural to see students cannot communicate fluently even after having learned English for several years. The reform of college English pointed out that English teaching should be linked with affection so as to facilitate students’group study and cooperation, and it also encouraged the promotion of interaction between teachers and students. In the process of practice, it must change the traditional grammar-translated method, because the traditional way of teaching has been proved to be detrimental to students’cultivation. Hence, Cooperative learning is applied to English teaching as an effective teaching strategy. Many studies have showed that Cooperative learning is an authoritative teaching method in helping students’ study, which can effectively improve students’interest as well as communication.This thesis introduces the definition, brief history and theoretical basis of Cooperative learning firstly; Chapter Three elaborates the current situation of college English, the comparison of traditional group-learning and Cooperative learning in English and the practical implementation of Cooperative learning in college English; In chapter four, the researcher proves the efficiency of applying Cooperative learning in college English of Chongqing University of Arts and Sciences according to experiments; Chapter five analyses the developmental value of Cooperative learning in college English although Cooperative learning benefits a lot to the students, in the process of practice, some problems still exist.In brief, the thesis highlights the significance and understanding of study theory according to applying Cooperative learning in practice, and what’s more, it provides the reflections on material to improve the problems existing in college English.
