The famous American contemporary writer J.D.Salinger has written lots ofworks during his whole life, with The Catcher in the Rye as the most famous one. Thethesis attempts to analyze The Catcher in the Rye from the perspective of ErichFromm’s alienation theories, and to deeply explore the alienation phenomenon in thenovel in the alienated society. Also the thesis tries to disclose the alienatedinterpersonal relationships, and to expose Holden’s anxiety and confusion in modernCapitalist society. This thesis aims to arouse the attention to teenager’s spiritualanguish in real life, taking Holden as the example, meanwhile, to explore Salinger’sthinking towards modern civilization.
