Along with the increasingly frequent external communication, the practice of interpretation has been greatly developed. International market has made a higher demand for this industry, which further leads to the promotion of teaching and training of sight interpreting.Sight translation is characterized by its source language input form. The interpreter receives new information by reading without phonetic assistance, and processes it basicly on the comprehension of written words. English varies much from Chinese, the translation of long sentences proves to be a great challenge for interpreters due to the intricate syntactic structures. Interpreting can be viewed as a cognitive activity of brain from the perspective of interpreters, and schema theory plays the role of background knowledge in language comprehension, explaining the bilingual processing mechanism in those activities. In a word, schema as the pre-existent knowledge of brain is the reason why people are able to comprehend and translate. As for the interpreting of English long sentences, interpreter’s efficiency and accuracy in analysis and translation can be enhanced by gathering and storing more schemata.Based on former study and personal practice, this thesis analyzes and summarizes schemata of syntactic structures and translation techniques of long English sentences. It is hoped that through consciously activate those schemata when interpreting that the efficiency and quality of sight translation can be improved.
