Leaders’ speech has always been an important form of political discourse, and it isalso the focus of the academic field at the same time, according to the surveyresearch there are more than60articles of master papers and Academic Press whichpublished a study on speech during the last five years. As the world politicaldignitaries, their speeches widely attracted the attention of the study enthusiasm oflanguage scholars, the Secretary General of the United Nations has very high socialstatus and authority, the current Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s speeches on theharmonious and stable development of the world and the international exchange withfriendly cooperation plays a vital role, and thus this study has higher academicresearch value.Based on the theory of appraisal theory, the discourse analysis is more significant inacademic research field. After nearly twenty years of development, appraisal theoryhas been occupied some valuable space in the academic field. Try to do the analysisof public speaking is a new academic research which highlights in the evaluationtheory and positive discourse analysis. The development of active vocabulary canprovide a new power for discourse analysis, so as to effectively play the role ofdiscourse analysis in the academic field. Previous scholars have made someachievements in positive discourse analysis, however, there are many aspects that weneed to explore in the space. So in this study, the author chooses Ban Ki-moon’sspeech as data, she not only can learn from experience of the previous scholars, butalso make a contribution to the research of positive discourse analysis.This paper from the new perspective of discourse analysis-positive discourseanalysis perspective, with the framework of the appraisal theory, using qualitativeanalysis method, combining the attitude system and graduation system, engagementevaluation of resources, does a positive discourse analysis on the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on October31,2010and August16,2014two times speechesat Nanjing University. In this paper, with the application of the above theory method,try to do positive discourse on the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s speech withappraisal theory as a theoretical tool analysis. The paper aims to study the positiveanalysis of the UN Secretary General’s speech, positively convey his recognition onthe achievements on the transformation of the China, and puts forward some viewson the practical problems, and strive to develop analysis position toward the positivedirection of discourse criticism, highlighting the social construction of function, so asto present a critical discourse analysis as a useful supplement.This study shows that, in addition to responding positively to the discourse analysisfrom the content of speech on one hand, more important is based on the speech ofthe social big discourse to enrich the analysis of positive discourse analysis, and thenin the texts of various discourse resources attitude, position and views of evaluationand analysis. Through the analysis the author finds that actively responding to socialproblems and putting forward the theoretical guidance can easily achieve thecommon effect of the speaker and the audience expectations. The author makes theuse of positive social background of Ban Ki-moon’s two speeches which has reallydeepen the research of political speech from a new perspective of discourse analysis.As a new force, the positive discourse analysis transfers the energy of the society; toview social construction function with a positive attitude; actively promoting reformand put forward the method to solve the problem peacefully; plays a supplementaryrole to critical discourse analysis.
