This thesis aims to analysis the directive speech act in the movie Harry Potterand the Philosopher’s Stone with the help of Thornburg and Panther’s speech acttheory and the pragmatic parameters in order to explain why the speaker can get themeaning of the utterance so quickly and effortlessly.The first part of this thesis is literature review, which states the studies of speechact and directive speech act both from at home and abroad and the previous studies ofHarry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The second part is the theoreticalframework, which includes the metonymy in cognitive perspective, speech actscenario and pragmatic parameters. The third part is the analysis of the directivespeech act in the movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and the effect ofdifferent speech act metonymy through the quantitative and qualitative analysis.Finally, the author includes the major findings, limitations of this paper and somesuggestions for the future studies. Metonymy plus a very important part in people’scognitive mechanism and is indispensible to interpersonal communication.
