Felix Mendelssohn, who was born in1809and died in1847, was known during the GermanRomanticism Period for his different kinds of identities such as a composer, a pianist, a conductor,a musical educator and a social activist. Mendelssohn has been playing an important role in thedevelopment of music career throughout Europe. Ever since the Classical Period, composers havegot more and more desire to create instrumental concerto. There have been numerous ViolinConcertos created by German composers, among which Violin Concerto in E minor is regarded asan another landmark instrumental work after Beethoven’s D Major Violin Concerto.Based on the relevant academic research, this essay selects Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto inE minor to study its musical characteristics and performance techniques in which the authorcombines the research with her music practice. This essay is divided into three main parts:Introduction of Mendelssohn’s life and experience; analysis on the musical characteristics andperformance techniques of Violin Concerto in E minor; the aesthetic value and historical status ofthis masterpiece. The author aims to achieve a comprehensive, detailed discussion of music theory,composition techniques and violin playing skills in order to provide both technical and theoreticalsupport for playing. Besides, the author hopes this research can work for the future of musiceducation.
