This is an English-Chinese translation report of Chapter4Sandstones and Sandstone Reservoirs from the book Petroleum Geoscience:From Sedimentary Environments to Rock Physics, written by Knut Bj(?)rlykke and Jens Jahren. The original text is one on petroleum technology, which introduces all aspects of sandstones and sandstone reservoirs. Abundant in technical terms, the source text features rigorousness and strictness in expressing meaning. Because of the difference between petroleum English and general English, the translator hopes to consolidate the translation skills from this practice. The translation aims at accuracy, objectivity, logic and clarity. Therefore, the functional equivalence theory established by Eugene Nida is accountable for the translation of this type. This report first introduces the source text, which includes the content, nature, purpose, meaning of the original text, and analyzes the intended readers of the translated version. Then it examines the characteristics of the source text and the translation methods adopted during the translating process, and it also discusses the application of functional equivalence theory. Functional equivalence does not mean word for word or sentence for sentence formal equivalence. It requires the translator to represent the information in the source text with the closest and most natural language. This theory emphasizes the replication of original information without the specific expression style, which meets the requirement of this translation. Moreover, the report states the difficulty in translating terminology and sentences, and the methods and skills applied to solve the problems. Lastly, it summarizes lessons and experience that the translator has got from the translation process, as well as some problems that remain unsolved.
