The journal Swallow, which was created by some left-wing party members was in favor of Lu Xun in Shanghai in 1936. Although it was popular when it was issued, it soon disappeared into the white terror after two issues, so it had little effects on the society at that time. Therefore, there are few particular reviews on it in the history of literature. This paper aims at re-picking up Swallow which has been put into history for a long time in order to reveal a real Shanghai in 1936. Meanwhile, it aims at revealing the historical picture of cultural forces of the left-wing party members which was led by Lu Xun.The full text is divided into three parts:The first part describes the background and situation of creating Swallow, which involves the interaction among Lu Xun and some other writers, such as Huang Yuan, Zheng Zhenduo, Mao Dun, and Fu Donghua and the suspension of publication of Translation. The focus of the first part is the contradictions between the left-wing writers and the booksellers. Exploring the background of Swallow can understand the reasons why the related writers gathered together. The second part focus on the interaction among the left-wing writers and the construction of social network. This part focus on two aspects:one is about Shanghai’s culture forces in the early 1930s and the choice of Lu Xun at that time. The other one is about the detailed information about the relevant writers of Swallow and the left-wing party members which was led by Lu Xun. The status of the Left and Lu Xun are the two main factors of the creation of Swallow. Lu Xun’s choice to the Left is the one of the preconditions of the gathering of the left-wing Literary and Artistic Youth, so to study the culture forces of Shanghai and the choice of Lu Xun can understand better the gathering of the left-wing Youth, which is also the precondition of the creation of Swallow. The key point of this part is to study the general frame of the gathering of the left-wing Literary and Artistic Youth for the revolutionary literature, including the reasons and the process. The third part focus on the relevant literary events of Swallow. Like many left-wing publications in the White Terror era, Swallow could not escape the fate of coming to a premature end. Even though it was such a short-lived journal, it caused great concern of the local authorities because a lot of left-wing writers participated in it, which resulted in a number of literary events, such as Cao Juren and Swallow, Issuer Event, and controversy caused by Lu Xun’s works and so on. Cao Juren and Swallow Issuer Event reflected the cooperation as well as the departured problems between leftist and non-leftist writers; Lu Xun’s works implied a series of gap and conflicts among different cultural forces and the impact on the left-wing writers at that time. People involved in the events stand for different political position with different ideas, which resulted in great controversy. Based on historical facts, this paper analyzes the barriers and contradiction behind the cultural forces through these events. This paper regards Swallow as a clue, yet the focus is the historical picture of cultural forces of the left-wing party members rather than Swallow. In the case of the writing strategy, based on historical facts, the paper puts a large focus on exploring the interaction among the relevant people to learn the literary life whose theme was Revolutionary Literature created by the left-wing literary and artistic youth in turbulent and complex Shang Hai at that time.
