A Genre Analysis Of Hotel Introduction On Homepage

"With the research focus shifting from grammar to text in linguistics, linguists, sociolinguists, anthrolinguists, rhetoricians, philosophers as well as linguistic educators began to turn their attention to the study of ’genre’" (Zhang Delu,2002:13). Therefore, genre analysis is widely applied into a variety of discourses. The present study conducts a genre analysis of English hotel introduction on homepage, disclosing its generic structure and linguistic features. The thesis probes into the following two questions:(1) What is the generic structure of online hotel introduction? (2) How are lexical chunks used and attitudinal resources distributed?Thirty samples of online English hotel introduction are collected and analyzed both at macro and micro levels. The analysis includes identification and discussion of possible moves, GSP, lexical chunks and attitudinal resources. The results show that firstly this genre involves 6 moves and they are DS, EC, HL, HP, OAI and SR, among which HL and HP are obligatory moves while the rest 4 are optional moves. Besides, these 6 identified moves are usually constructed in a general sequence. Secondly, DS, HL, HP and SR have typical lexical chunks, with a high frequency of repetition, while EC and OAI have a variety of lexical chunks. Finally, there is a rich attitudinal resources at the level of lexis and the positive attitudes are expressed in a rather explicit manner. Besides, appreciation is preferred to affect and judgment, and there is a disparity in terms of their occurrence frequency in different moves, with HP having the most abundant attitudinal resources.Having unveiled the generic structure and linguistic features of online hotel introduction, this present study is conductive to enhancing the writing skill and competence of those who are to construct English hotel introduction. Moreover, it helps readers gain information about the hotel in a more accurate and effective way.
